Columbia Academy : 1977 Nov. 15 [typescript] / David W. Robinson.

Research paper re history of the Columbia Male Academy, an institution incorporated in 1795 that educated generations of white male students; this facility was later known as the Thompson School, in honor of principal Hugh Thompson, whose long tenure spanned the years 1865-1880; beginning in 1883, the school was leased to the Columbia City School System, at which time the Male Academy served older white boys; the Columbia Female Academy taught white girls and young boys; and the Howard School educated African American boys and girls. The lawyer who wrote this paper researched the history of this private school as preparation for a law suit, brought ca. 1970, which addressed the dual nature of this institution's administration and the Academy's property, as defined in its 1795 charter. The essay includes text from the S.C. General Assembly, Special Subcommittee Report on the Columbia Academy (10 June 1971). Robinson delivered this talk before his colleagues in the "Cosmos Club," an organization that also spelled its name as Kosmos Club.
